There are many lies and misrepresentations that the church today likes to perpetuate. It is inconceivable that they are not aware of the Biblical truth, so why not change?
Most people do not understand what Jesus did on the cross. Since He had no sins of His own, he had to take on our sins in order to die. As through Adam sin conquered the entire human race, through Jesus sin was forgiven for the entire human race. No one will burn in hell for their sins, they burn in hell for their disbelief... Jesus paid for all sins from day one to the last day, and everyone has been forgiven for everything they have or will do. Hell is not the punishment that God ordained for sin, death is. Hell is the punishment for disbelief. You can not earn your way up into heaven, and you can not earn your way down into hell... but you can store up treasures in heaven and you can crank up the heat in hell by the things you do in this life. The same Jesus that gives you a hand up into heaven is the One who will otherwise give you the boot down into hell.
1) Justification. This is an event, but can be reaffirmed repeatedly at any time.
2) Sanctification. This is a life long process. This is where works fit in to the picture.
3) Glorification. This is when you die. It is appointed unto man once to die and then the judgement. After you die there is no need for salvation, nor is there any opportunity for salvation.

Jesus was baptised by immersion, and that's good enough for me.
